Eyelet Granny Square
At beginners workshops, I start off teaching granny squares. In the follow on joining up and edgings workshop, the participants receive a bonus pattern which extends their granny square repetoire. As its not possible to share the entire workshop with you – why would you come otherwise? – I can share the bonus pattern. This is an adaptation I’ve designed by merging 2 different approaches to making crochet squares:
The Eyelet Granny Square
Materials: Yarns in colours A, B
Appropriate sized hook
Instructions
Foundation | Make 4ch |
Round 1 | Using A work 8dc into the ring and join with ss to form a circle |
Round 2 | Using A (1dc, 5ch, miss 1dc) 4times, ss in 1stdc. |
Round 3 | Using A, (5dc in 5chsp) 4 times , sc in 1stdc to join |
Round 4 | Using B, 3ch*1tr in each of next 2 st the work corner (2tr, 1ch, 2tr) in next st to form corner. 1tr in each of 3sts *, rep from * 3 times sc in 1st dc and fasten off |

Materials – all patterns will start by telling you what you need
25g of colour A, Button of your choice
4mm knitting needles, sewing up needle
Make 1 pieces – All patterns tell you which part of the item you will make and the No. Of pieces of that part you need to make
Cast on 25 (30) sts
Rows 1-10 – K (Knit ) – here you work 10 rows of garter stitch
Row 7 and all odd rows – K
Row 8 and all even rows –P (purl)
Repeat rows 7 and 8 until your phone case is ½ in longer than your phone – you work these rows in Stocking Stitch or SS
Cast off
To make up – all patterns tell you how to sew your finished item up
Weave in all ends
Using mattress stitch join the back seam
Sew on the button securely
Beginners Hint! You can achieve a wide range of colour effects by using patterned yarns without needing to learn colour knitting!
